Xochimilco - The floating Aztec gardens. In the southern part of Mexico City, a treasure lies hidden in the famous canals of Xochimilco, the last remnants of a vast water transport system built by the Aztecs. Colourful gondola-like boats ( trajineras ) take visitors through the water ways while food vendors, artisans and mariachi bands float past. The atmosphere is festive. If you dare to drift further in amongst the "ahuejote" ( willow trees ) and the natural calls of local birds and insects, you will find yourself on the eerie, (supposedly) haunted ( chinampas ) Island of the Dolls. Quiet, spiritual, colourful, peaceful, uplifting. This experience stole my heart, I could actually picture ancient Aztec farmers greeting me from the banks as we quietly drifted by.
