On August 3rd, GoGirls hosted an interactive session on careers in #STEM for thirty-one girls from Juba Diocesan Model Secondary School. The session, led by the inspiring speaker delphine nyaboke from the Women in Tech Club Carnegie Mellon University Africa, was a platform for the girls to gain insights into #STEM fields, hear about her career journey, and receive invaluable tips for excelling in #STEM subjects and fields. Throughout the session, the girls posed questions on what #computerscience is all about and the connection between #arts and #sciences. A demo of how to develop apps using MIT App Inventor was given. Students were given an overview of how to navigate the interface of App Inventor to show how easy it is to code using the graphical user interface rather than hardcore coding. During the session, the #ICT teacher remarked receiving frequent inquiries from the girls, especially in senior two, regarding whether #computerscience or #IT is exclusively for boys, as they felt unable to identify females in the field. He highlighted how the session broadened the girls' perspectives on career choices and reinforced the crucial message that women are equally involved in these fields. In his closing remarks, the deputy head teacher expressed his strong resonance with the guest speaker's story of resilience and announced plans to establish at least two career sessions for Senior two students and candidates, with mentorship support from GoGirls. This proactive initiative aims to guide and support students in making informed career decisions and better prepare them for life after completing secondary school. #WomenIntech #InspiringInclusion Photo credit: Moss Damian
