It takes a village to raise a man. Last week I had the pleasure of staying with a family at Antanitsara, a village way off grid on the east coast of Madagascar. Life is undeniably hard there but we saw so many positives. Growing up in Antanitsara teaches young people responsibility, to value community, friendship, integrity and education, and the importance of healthcare, emotional and physical support and small entrepreneurial ventures set up with the tiniest amounts of surplus cash. All this initiated by the people themselves with little if any government support and no NGOs. All they need to improve their lives is access to the market to sell (eg. a mobile phone and signal) and for people to pay a fair price for their coffee and vanilla crops.
