When we visited Conakry with volunteers Carol and Andy last month we had one day off - tourism is almost non- existent in Guinea and finding day trips hard. But I had heard people went out to the islands 40 minutes off the coast at weekends to escape the chaos of capital. We took a car to the "small boats port" to see whether we could find a way to sail to the ring of islands formed when a volcano submerged. It was an adventure of that unique Guinean type - lost of arguments over which boat to take - paper work to fill in - a pirogue journey to another time and place. We walked across the nearest island to a beautiful beach, swam, drank beer and ate barbecued fish returning back refreshed for our week at the school
